Imagine two shops on the same street. One has a clear sign: name, hours, services, prices. The other has no sign at all — you'd have to walk in and figure it out yourself.

To a search engine or an AI assistant, a website without structured data is the shop with no sign. The machine has to guess what you do, where you are, and whether you're credible. Structured data is the sign. Here's what business owners actually need to know — no programming background required.

What Structured Data Actually Is

Structured data — also called schema markup or JSON-LD — is a block of code embedded in your website that describes your business in a standardized format machines understand instantly: your business type, name, address, phone, hours, services, prices, reviews, and the questions you answer.

Human visitors never see it. But Google, Bing, and AI systems like ChatGPT read it before almost anything else, because it's the one part of your website with zero ambiguity.

Why It Directly Affects Your Leads

Structured data influences three things that produce leads. First, rich results: review stars, FAQ dropdowns, and business info panels in Google search results — which dramatically increase clicks. Second, the local map pack: complete, consistent structured data strengthens your local ranking signals. Third, AI recommendations: when an AI assistant decides which business to name, the one it can parse cleanly wins.

None of this requires more traffic. It converts the visibility you already have into more clicks and more trust.

The Four Types Every Local Service Business Needs

LocalBusiness schema: your name, address, phone, hours, service area, and pricing — the foundation. Service schema: describes each specific service you offer so machines connect you to specific searches. FAQPage schema: marks your question-and-answer content so it can appear directly in search results and AI answers. Review/AggregateRating schema: displays your rating and review count, backed by real reviews.

A competent developer can implement all four in a day. Most small business websites have none of them.

How to Check Your Own Website in Two Minutes

Go to Google's free Rich Results Test (search 'rich results test'), paste in your homepage address, and run it. If it comes back with 'no items detected,' your website is the shop with no sign.

While you're at it, run your competitors. If they're missing it too, you have an opportunity. If they have it and you don't, you now know one reason they may be outranking you.

The Consistency Rule

Structured data must match what's visibly on your website and what's on your Google Business Profile. If your schema says one phone number and your footer says another, you've made things worse — machines treat contradictions as red flags.

This is why structured data isn't a one-time checkbox. Change your hours, pricing, or services? The schema needs to change with them. It's part of maintaining your website, not decorating it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I add structured data myself with a plugin?

If your site runs on WordPress, plugins can generate basic schema. The risk is misconfiguration — wrong business type, mismatched details, or duplicate markup — which can hurt rather than help. Have someone who knows what they're doing verify it.

Will structured data improve my ranking by itself?

It's not a magic ranking switch — it's a clarity multiplier. It makes every other signal (content, reviews, local presence) easier for machines to read and trust, and it unlocks rich results that increase clicks.

How do I know if my web designer included it?

Run your site through Google's Rich Results Test. If nothing is detected, it wasn't included. It's fair to ask any designer you're considering whether schema markup is part of their standard build — at AKR it is.

Does structured data matter for AI search like ChatGPT?

Yes, increasingly. AI systems favor sources they can parse without ambiguity. Structured data is the most machine-readable description of your business that exists.
